WELCOME to the spring edition of the LMA Newsletter.

Work has continued on a variety of projects since the last Newsletter and it is hoped that a number of publications and exhibitions will soon be available.

Funding continues to be a major pre-occupation and applications for both top-up funding and grants for new and continuing projects have been submitted.

Polish Lending Boxes

An event to launch the Polish Lending Boxes was held at St Columba’s by the Castle on 4th October, 2002.

The boxes which are intended to stimulate memories, reminiscence and discussion amongst older members of the Polish Community, have been produced by Alzheimer’s Scotland Action of Dementia in conjunction with Pilmeny Development Project. The boxes contain written materials in English and Polish, videos and tapes and 3-dimensional, cultural objects. They can also be used to promote understanding of the Polish Community amongst members of the general population.

The boxes can be borrowed free, apart from a small, returnable deposit, from: -

WORK IN PROGRESS

The LMA has received a small grant from the Council's Social Justice Fund to record the memories of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities in Edinburgh. There has been little if no reminiscence work done with members of these communities and yet they have a fascinating history which has, until now, often been hidden from public view. A team of volunteers has been trained in interviewing skills and the use of recording equipment. Interviews are now taking place and a small exhibition will be produced in June. If you would like to take part in this project please contact us at the address below.

Our Multi-Media/Music Reminiscence Project which has taken place in Leith and been funded by the N.E. Edinburgh Local Development Committee, has been completed and will be presented on May 7th 2003 at Leith Library, 28-20 Ferry Road, 2pm-4pm.

Work continues on expanding and up-dating the LMA website www.livingmemory.org.uk

You will also shortly be able to access over the Internet nearly 1000 images from our photographic archive. Work continues to copy photographs for the archive and if you have any images you would like us to see, then please do get in touch.

A further edition of “Edinburgh Lives” our magazine of memories will be available later in the year. Lothiansound, which produces Talking Newspapers for the Blind, plans to record two issues of “Edinburgh Lives” on tape. The tapes will be on sale at low cost.

Two new books will become available by the summer. One is a collection of people's memories of the Canongate and the other contains the memories and experiences of those who lived and worked in Gogarburn Hospital before closure.

Three other volunteer led projects are also underway.

The first will produce a video to promote reminiscence and oral history work.

The second is a project to record the memories in voice and photographs of people who drink in three Leith pubs.

The third is a storytelling project which will take place in the Prestonfield area.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM of The Living Memory Association will be held on Wednesday, 7th May, 2003 at 4pm in Leith Library, 28-30 Ferry Road, Edinburgh
